You finally found a bra that fits.
It feels supportive, comfortable, and like a small victory in a body that keeps changing.
Then two weeks later, it does not fit anymore.
If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. Your breasts go through more changes during pregnancy and breastfeeding than at any other time in your life.
Understanding when those shifts happen helps you stop buying the wrong size at the wrong time.
1. First Change: Early Pregnancy (Weeks 6 to 12)
One of the earliest signs of pregnancy is breast tenderness and swelling.
Rising levels of oestrogen and progesterone cause increased blood flow and the growth of milk ducts, often before your bump is even visible.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, some women go up one full cup size during the first trimester alone. This is when many mums find their regular bras suddenly feel tight, underwires dig in, and the band feels restrictive.
Switching to a wire-free, stretchy bra at this stage makes a noticeable difference in daily comfort.
2. Second Change: Late Pregnancy (Weeks 32 to 40)
Your breasts continue to grow as your body prepares for milk production. The Montgomery glands around your areola become more prominent, and your rib cage expands to accommodate your growing baby, which means your band size increases too.
Research from the Royal College of Midwives suggests that most women go up an additional one to two cup sizes and one band size by the end of pregnancy. This is a good time to invest in a nursing bra with flexible sizing, because your next change is just around the corner.

3. Third Change: When Your Milk Comes In (Days 2 to 5 Postpartum)
This is the most dramatic shift.
When your milk transitions from colostrum to mature milk, your breasts can increase by another one to two cup sizes almost overnight.
Engorgement is common and temporary, but during those few days, you need a bra that stretches with you rather than squeezing you.
ACOG notes that engorgement typically peaks around day three to five and gradually settles as your supply regulates. A bra with no rigid structure and easy nursing access is essential during this phase.
Many mums find that seamless, pull-aside styles work best because they accommodate rapid size fluctuations without adding pressure.
4. Fourth Change: Supply Regulation (Weeks 6 to 12 Postpartum)
Once your body adjusts to your baby's feeding pattern, your breasts settle into a more consistent size. This is usually slightly smaller than the engorgement peak but still larger than your pre-pregnancy size.
This is when it makes sense to assess your fit properly.
A bra that felt right at week one postpartum may feel loose by week eight. Look for bras with adjustable features, multiple hook positions on the band, and fabrics that move with your body rather than against it.

5. The Ongoing Shifts: Weaning, Growth Spurts, and Beyond
Even after supply regulates, your size can fluctuate.
Growth spurts cause baby to feed more, temporarily increasing your supply. Travel, stress, and illness can also affect breast fullness. And when you eventually wean, your breasts will change again as milk production tapers off.
Choosing supportive, well-fitting bras throughout the journey helps your body feel comfortable at every stage.

The Bottom Line
Your body is not being difficult. It is adapting brilliantly to grow, feed, and nurture your baby.
The key is not finding one perfect bra that lasts the whole journey. It is understanding when your needs shift and choosing pieces that shift with you.
Look for flexible sizing, wire-free support, breathable fabrics, and easy nursing access. These features matter far more than a specific cup size on a label.
Your body is doing something remarkable. It deserves to feel supported through every change.
