Everyone talks about the glowing skin and the growing bump.

But the third trimester comes with some truly bizarre surprises that nobody mentions at baby showers.

Here are five things that caught me completely off guard.

1. Your brain actually restructures itself

Pregnancy brain is not in your head (well, technically it is).

Research shows that your brain physically changes during the third trimester, with gray matter in certain areas actually decreasing to help you bond with your baby and become more attuned to their needs.

A landmark study published in Nature Neuroscience found that pregnancy causes significant changes in brain structure that can last at least two years postpartum.

These changes occur in regions involved in social cognition and theory of mind, essentially helping you better understand your baby's needs.

So when you put your phone in the fridge or forget why you walked into a room, you are not losing your mind. Your brain is literally rewiring itself for motherhood. Science is wild.

2. Your baby is tasting your dinner

Whatever you eat, your baby tastes through the amniotic fluid.

Spicy curry for lunch? Baby gets a hint. That mango you had for snack? Baby knows.

Studies show babies exposed to certain flavors in the womb are more likely to enjoy those foods later. Some researchers even suggest this is why many of us crave the foods our mothers ate while pregnant with us.

Mind-blowing, right? You are not just nourishing your baby. You are introducing them to your family's food culture before they are even born.

3. You might experience "lightning crotch" (yes, really)

Nobody warns you about the sudden, sharp, shooting pains in your pelvic area that feel like tiny electric shocks. It has an actual name: lightning crotch.

It happens because your baby is settling lower into your pelvis, putting pressure on nerves, particularly the pudendal nerve.

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, this is completely normal as your baby descends in preparation for birth.

The silver lining? It usually means your baby is getting into position for birth. The less fun part? There is not much you can do except breathe through it and maybe avoid sudden movements.

4. Your sense of smell becomes genuinely superhuman

You thought morning sickness made you sensitive to smells? Third trimester takes it to another level. You can smell things nobody else notices.

Your partner's deodorant from across the room. Yesterday's leftovers sealed in the fridge. The neighbor's cooking three floors down.

Research published in 'Frontiers in Psychology' suggests this heightened olfactory sensitivity is your body's protective mechanism, helping you avoid potentially harmful substances during pregnancy. This is especially pronounced in the third trimester as your body prepares for birth.

But it also means you might suddenly hate your favorite perfume, cannot stand the smell of certain foods, or need to change your entire skincare routine because everything smells wrong.

5. Time becomes an alternate reality

The third trimester does something strange to your perception of time.

Days drag endlessly, especially when you are uncomfortable and counting down to your due date.

But somehow, weeks fly by in a blur.

You are simultaneously thinking "will this ever end?" and "wait, how is it already 36 weeks?"

This is partly physical (when you are uncomfortable, time feels slower) and partly emotional (anticipation and anxiety mess with our time perception).

Research on time perception shows that discomfort, disrupted sleep, and heightened emotional states all affect how we experience the passage of time.

There is no fix for this. Just know you are not imagining it.

The Bottom Line

The third trimester is stranger than anyone tells you. Your body is doing extraordinary, sometimes weird, always remarkable things.

Some days it will feel overwhelming. Other days, you will be amazed by what your body can do. Most days, it will be a bit of both.

Whatever you are feeling, whatever bizarre symptom you are experiencing, you are not alone.

And somehow, despite all the strangeness, your body knows exactly what it is doing.
